Historical references to a universal energy field date back as far as 5000 B.C. to India where prana was considered to be the basic source of life. In China it was called chi and was believed to be in all matter. Two polar forces were recognized, yin and yang. When these two forces were in balance, one was considered to be healthy. More recently Western medicine has begun to recognize energy within the body with the advent of devices capable of detecting its effects in the body. Energy fields associated with the human body have been detected by electroencephalograms (EEG), electrocardiograms (ECG), and very highly sensitive devices such as superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID). Even biomagnetism has been recognized, as more sensitive devices have been developed to measure very weak magnetic fields.
Practitioners of alternative forms of health care often believe much of the illness we see in the human body is the result of either a blockage of the flow of energy of the body, or an imbalance in the energy from one side of the body to the other. When the energy balance is restored, the body begins the healing process. Often, symptoms seem to almost miraculously lessen or even disappear. Conditions such as migraine headaches, the cause of which is poorly understood anyway, respond remarkably well to a restoration of the energy in the body.
Energy imbalance is the result of too much nerve energy being sent to a part of the body in response to pain or dysfunction. Nerve energy, as I have called it here, is an electrical signal that is sent along the path of the nerve. All electrical signals also have a magnetic field. The magnetic field is so weak around this nerve impulse that it would seem to be undetectable. When measures are taken to restore proper balance to the energy of the body, a clinical result can be measured. A definite beneficial change takes place. If balance is not restored, the body gets caught in an endless loop of trying to make corrections. The result is an imbalance in which the deficient side develops painful trigger points. These trigger points are formed in the areas where acupuncture meridians are located. Therapies have been developed using these points to release blockages of energy and allow the proper amount of energy to flow. One does not need to use needles. These are the same acupressure points used by massage therapists, and other touch type therapies, to release tension, increase blood flow, and strengthen the body’s natural life force to assist in healing.
When energy is flowing to one side of the body more than to the other, it can be easily felt in the form of muscle tension. Nerve impulses are sent along the nerves to muscles and other locations in the body. In the muscles, this naturally causes them to be more contracted. A muscle that is contracted is shorter than a muscle that is relaxed. Remember as children how we showed off our muscles by forcefully contracting them ourselves? As a result of the increased muscle contraction, one entire side of the body will often feel tighter and tenser than the other. How can we balance this energy and cause both sides of the body to be equally relaxed? The method is simple.
Trigger points are located by their tenderness, and once located, gentle pressure is applied. The initial stimulation of the trigger point sends a signal to the central nervous system to send more energy to the deficient side. It is like saying, “Hey, look! There is a problem over here too.” The side that was getting the excessive energy suddenly has energy diverted from it, and the deficient side begins to receive an increase in energy. After a short time, a balance is achieved. The body is then able to use its resources for healing instead of continually attempting to bring the flow of its energy back into balance.

Want to lose a little weight? Even better, would you like to keep that weight off? Weight loss can be easier than you think.
Try eating several small meals a day. This does not mean eating several small meals of high calorie food. It also does not mean you need to give up all the foods you love. Eat half of what you think you want and you will be surprised at the difference this can make in the area of weight loss. When you eat five or six small meals a day you are not as likely to overeat because you will not be as hungry. People make a big mistake when they try to lose weight by eating only once a day.
Many people think that they can lose weight quickly by eating 800 calories a day. This may be true but the potential for gaining that weight right back is huge. As soon as your body adjusts to 800 calories a day and then you start eating more, you will gain all the weight you lost and maybe more.
You can try a diet program at a weight loss clinic. These programs can be very successful but you may need to stay with the program for the rest of your life or risk a weight gain.
One of the best things to do if you want to lose weight safely and keep it off is to watch the snacking. If you get hungry between meals have fruit, raw veggies, low fat yogurt or low calorie snacks like popcorn or prepackaged 100 calorie snacks.
Weight loss does not need to be a terrible ordeal. Cut back on what you eat, exercise everyday and slowly your goal of weight loss will be reached.

Fad diets are everywhere. They come and they go. some simply run their course then disappear forever, while some pop up, go away for a while, then sort of show up again a year or two later and continue to repeat this cycle. the fact is, there are a lot of good, sound ways to lose weight and keep it off for good, but finding these ways to a more fit and trim body means you’ll need to be able to spot the “fads” out there that simply do not work long term and can be dangerous to your health in the long run. Here are some tell tale things to look for to help you see your way past the fake and phony gimmicks that are out there and remember, if it sounds too good to be true……
1) A MAGICAL PILL, DRINK, POWDER OR FOOD IS USED: The weight loss industry is a $30 billion dollar per Year Empire. These companies are making massive amounts of money marketing new “breakthrough” potions that make lots of false claims. They know how desperate many overweight people are to lose weight and so they know how easy it is to target this market. the FDA has very little jurisdiction over these kinds of products since the weight loss companies claim that their products are “natural” or “herbal”, and only when these products cause health problems or even deaths like in the recent case of ephedrine, the FDA will step in.
2) DIFFERENT FOOD COMBINATIONS SUPPOSIDLY MAKE YOU LOSE WEIGHT: There is no scientific evidence to support any claims that certain food combinations will induce weight loss. Simply consuming fewer calories than you burn each day with a good balance of nutrients will lead to healthy weight loss.
3) THE PLAN WORKS “WITHOUT EXERCISE”: While most people would like to be able to take the easy way out, a little exercise goes a long way in any weight loss effort. Sure you can lose weight without exercise, but if you want to lose mostly fat and not muscle and water, and look healthy and good once you’ve achieved your weight loss goal, you need at least 30 minutes per day, 4-5 days per week of light to moderate exercise like walking, swimming and even a little weight training.
4) IT PROMISES MORE THAN ONE OR TWO POUNDS OF WEIGHT LOSS PER WEEK: In order for any well balanced weight loss plan to be both affective and healthy, you should not strive to lose more than 1-2 pounds per week. A plan that proposes that you will lose 30 pounds in 30 days is not a good, sound, healthy plan. One pound of fat equals about 2500 calories. This means that if a person were to burn up 400-500 more calories per day with, say, a small reduction in food and a little exercise, they would lose around one to one and a half pounds of fat per week. This is a healthy and ideal way to lose weight.
5) YOU SEE THE WORDS “FAT BURNER”, “FAT TRAPPER” OR ANYTHING ALONG THOSE LINES: Run like the wind from these types of products. Most of these products have side effects that would make the most desperate of dieters cringe. All I can say here is, if your really considering any of these types of products, do your homework and read everything you can about them first, or take my advice and avoid them like the plague.
6) IT SAYS IT WILL “BOOST YOUR METABOLISM”: Most of these products are little more than caffeine products. A pill, powder or drink cannot speed up your metabolism. There is no logic behind this at all! These products are usually diuretics that serve only to speed up you heart rates in turn making your organs work faster thus flushing water out of your body. The temporary feeling of being thinner will be short lived, and you will only end up fatter in the long run.
7) ONE TYPE OF FOOD IS CONSUMED TO EXCESS: Most of you have heard of the cabbage soup diet. Remember the grapefruit diet? How many people do you know who have tried one of these diets, lost weight, and kept it off? Probably none! I personally know people who have tried these diets, swore by them with complete assurance they would work (against my advice, mind you) and failed badly. Only a few even lost any weight at all, sung the praises of the plan, only to end up fatter in 6 months than when they began the diet. These types of weight loss programs are meant to be discontinued after a certain time meaning that when you go back to your normal routine, you can expect to get a high rate of “return” back for your investment.
ITS A LOW CARBOHYDRATE DIET: The long and short of it here is that you need carbohydrates in your diet, particularly if you are trying to lose weight. Removing most of the carbs from your diet means that more fat (at 9 calories per gram) will replace those carbs (at 4 calories per gram) not to mention the wide variety of health issues associated with a high fat intake. Also, excess protein will not help because your body can only use so much protein within a certain period of time. All of the extra protein will just store as fat. Carbs are also your body’s main source of energy, and you need that energy to get you through your exercise routines that you should be doing anyway.
9) DRINKING WATER IS NOT MENTIONED: Water is absolutely essential for proper weight loss. If you’re not being told to drink at least 8 glasses or two liters of water per day, you are not getting good advice. Water helps your body to mobilize and get rid of excess fat. It also helps your liver convert fat into energy, which in turn will help you to burn more calories.
10) THERE IS NO WARNING FOR PEOPLE WITH MEDICAL CONDITIONS: If a weight loss product or plan yields no warning for people with problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disorders and such, the product or plan should be looked at very suspect. The high fat content of a low carbohydrate diet can be very dangerous to a person with high cholesterol or high blood pressure and someone with diabetes should never tamper with their diets without consulting with their doctor. Any good, sound weight loss program will always be concerned first and foremost with the safety and well being of the people using them. If there are no warnings, then you can rest assured that your health and well being are not an issue that is important to the company that is selling their products to you.
While it can be very difficult to see past all the hype and advertising that gets in the way of the truth behind all of the “fad” diets on the market today with new ones coming all the time, at least now you have some basics to help guide you through the maze of falsehoods out there and lead you on your way to being able to find a weight loss program that truly will give you the long term weight loss results you have been searching for.

Our authenticity is found hidden in the small details of our daily round -
home, family, work and pleasures.
- Something more “Small thing forgotten”
Susan Jeffers mentions in her book “Dare to Connect” something called
“Everybody training” instead of “somebody training”. The majority of
people are programmed from a young age that we must be a “somebody”
we seek out to be accepted by others including acceptance from friends,
family, the church, groups, the society, the nation and the world. We
climb to the top of the “work ladder” go away on holidays and spend our
money on luxuries goods. Most of us jump on the treadmill of more,
better, best without actually ever realizing who we are. We put our mask
on, and ‘act’ as people want us to act. Eventually our authentic self
becomes hidden and our ego self is absorbed and acted out daily, this is
“somebody training”.
We have to realize that a lot of people are walking around acting out
what people want them to be. (I know from experience that most people
would rather connect with a genuine less than saintly human, not a fake
robotic person. They would rather them be themselves and have aninteraction that has the human touch of less than perfect. Accepting
each other as they are; flaws and all.)
Under the surface of the “mask” that many of us are wearing we are
being held back by loneliness, isolation, and lack of self-esteem. We need
to realize what mask we are wearing, once we can identify our mask we
can learn to change our behaviours when we simultaneously try to
impress others hoping for acceptance we neglect our authenticity of who
we are as humans and as unique individual beings.
Psychiatrist W.W Broadbent identifies a few mask that people wear.
Man’s man style (I am absolutely fearless.)
Saint style (Aren’t I sweet, smiling, loving and accepting?)
Windy style (Aren’t I wonderfully articulate?)
Chameleon style ( Ill be anything you want me to be)
Moralizer style (I am virtuous and righteous and I always do what I
should do…and so should you!)
Frightened-fawn-in-the-forest style (I am weak and need you to
take care of me)
Martyr style (Oh, what I have done for you and get nothing in
return.)
Super-self-sufficient style (I don’t you, I don’t need anyone.)
Playing authentic style (Look how honest and forthright and
authentic I am.)
Toilet-bowl syndrome (Poor, poor me. The whole world is shitting
on me.)
Red Cross nurse style (Can’t you see how giving and nurturing I
am?)
Guru style (Look how wise I am)
One-upman style (See how cleverly I can put anyone down)
Fan style (Whatever you do, it is great!)
Nice-guy style (How could you help but like such a charming,
sweet guy as I am?)
Dig me style (Don’t I entertain and amuse you?)
EXERCISE:
Can you identify your personal mask you use to cover up your authentic
self around people?
Can you list five people that you believe wear any of the above mask.
Person Mask
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
How does it make you feel when others cover up who they really are?
Why do you think they cover up their authentic self?
Can you recall a time when you covered up who you really were in
order to be a “somebody”? How did this make you feel?
Can you recall a time where you felt like you were a “everybody”? How
did this make you feel?
LIFE WORKS ASSIGNMENT:Observe this week who you are most prone to cover up your authentic self around? And why you cover up your authentic self around this person?
1. Is this necessary?
2. How did this make you feel?
3. How can you be more of your authentic self around this person?

This year, we all made some of the typical New Year’s resolutions. We want to quit smoking, spend more time with our kids, and drop a few pounds. They are all great goals, but as February has arrived, how are we doing?
If you have found yourself lagging behind on meeting your goals, don’t get upset. Making a resolution on January 1st is a good time for renewal, but today is just as worthy of change.
Don’t give up on your dreams. There are many healthy diets out there that are still waiting for you. The South Beach, Atkins, and other numerous plans are still our there waiting for you. But you have to take charge to make the change.
If you are putting it off because you don’t now which one is right for you, talk to your doctor or other health professional. They will be able to help you with a plan that is safe and effective for your dieting needs.
Adding a workout to your new way of eating will increase your chance of success. Not only will it help you to shed a few pounds, you will feel better than you ever expected.
But where do I start, you ask? Again, you and your doctor will be able to determine what is right for your goals and abilities. You don’t have to go full bore at the gym. There are plenty of exercise equipment options that you can take advantage of in your own home. They don’t require a lot of investment, and many dealers offer gently used equipment at reduced prices.
There are some wonderful tapes or DVDs that can also make your home workout easier. You can gradually increase your workout as you feel comfortable.
Remember that there is always a time to make a resolution for a better life. Just because January is gone doesn’t mean you have to wait until next year. It is easy to make excuses, but the excuses have no rewards.

Of all the medicines used in the treatment of dis-ease, Hope is probably the most potent. The idea that there is some form of light at the end of the tunnel allows people to mobilize their reserves to move toward recovery. When there is “no hope” (once again, an idea), there is nothing to move toward.
If you look at all the modalities of healing throughout the ages you will find slews of therapies, treatments, counseling, medicines and even procedures that, by today’s standards, would never work. Yet, so many of them did on so many people - regardless of all the facts that we know today. Even in spite of them!
Somewhere within each modality that worked when all outward indications screamed otherwise, was hope. And if you were to trace each incident to its turning point you would find that the person seeking hope found it, in some form, through connection.
Using the metaphor of a key and a lock again, the form that gives hope life is the individual’s ability to, in some way, feel in synch, be a part of, or move in alignment with that which is offered; a connection. In essence, the person who can connect with what is offered is most likely to derive benefit from it.
The funny thing is a person may embrace an option offered - no matter how outlandish - if he or she feels a connection with the person offering the option. Faith healers, clairvoyants, doctors, therapists and snake-oil salesman of all stripes have the power to inspire confidence in the routes they offer to wellness.
Much of that power stems from their own belief in what they have to offer (as in their own connection to it). So often it is the perceived potency of the person doing the offering that turns the trick.
If a practitioner is able to reach the part of the individual that only has the lack of hope standing between herself and wellness, she can then begin to mobilize her defenses. The force we call healing can use anything as a springboard. Sometimes, it will use a charlatan to ignite the fire of hope in someone that will then lead them to a real solution.
This is not meant to encourage deceit; rather it is offered to illustrate the tremendous power that connection holds in the lives of those in need, and its efficacy as a tool for healers. It is of paramount importance that the healer understands this. The implication here is that use of connection to further healing is a sacred trust and deserves the respect of being held in that light.
When you feel you can connect with a therapy, idea, healer, procedure, Higher Power, or whatever, you’ve taken the most pivotal step toward attaining wholeness. To know that whatever ails you can be accessed and opened by the right (or combination of right) key(s) is the light at the end of the tunnel.
The biggest fear is of the unknown. It’s important that you find some way to communicate that you are a real person and that whatever you will be doing from that moment on is a by-product of your connection with the person, the situation at hand, AND your connection with the therapies you can deliver. All it takes is a few words, a gesture, or an action to begin that phase of a healing relationship.
Physical proximity and touch (where accepted) are hugely important tools. Recent studies have shown there is a measurable, energetic connection between human hearts in proximity to each other. When a person in distress is physically close to someone who has come to help, within a few minutes of their contact, you will see something very interesting: If each is hooked up to an EKG (electrocardiogram) machine, which records in wave form the electrical activity of their hearts, a reading of what is called “entrainment” occurs. This is where both people’s hearts establish a common rhythm.
The important thing here is that the affected does not necessarily adopt the helper’s rhythm, though it reaches out to meet the calmness and lack of distress evident therein. Together, they establish a common rhythm.
Connection is all about a joining of forces. Just as certain chemical combinations in a pill will join forces with the chemical combinations in the blood to produce a favorable change in the overall chemistry of the patient, so, too, does the connection between people produce a blending of energies that complement each other, thereby effecting change.
Rather than worrying about whether or not, or how, you’re connecting with the person in your charge, keep focusing on the moment with that person, and deal with it honestly. The healing connection will take care of itself.
