What Can We Learn From What Has Already Been Done?

Posted by admin on June 17, 2010 in Martial Arts

Pre-WWII Judo was a far different thing than what we see now.

The Japanese in particular, being on a global war footing, practiced a type of Judo that has little in common with the “sport” of today.

Japanese “bujin” particularly those situated in China during this period had to be the BEST they could be. The Japanese police were renowned for having among their ranks many of the top Judoka.

The Japanese presence in Shanghai insured that the quality of Judoka practicing there was of the highest caliber. Shanghai during this period was a volatile, beguiling and dangerous place.

Into this mix comes a young Irishman named Dermot Michael O’Neil. He joins the SMP in 1925 at age twenty. He rises in rank, secures a respected position on the SMP Riot Squad, is recognized as a protégé’ of W.E. Fairbairn and earns a reputation as a “good” man in a dust up. Besides his recruit training and his assignment under WEF on the Riot Squad, he becomes a dedicated devotee of Japanese and Chinese combatives, especially Kodokan Judo.

He becomes an acknowledged expert, a true expert, proven both on the tatami of various “dojo” and on the streets of Shanghai. He trains under some of the BEST native Japanese sensei available. He travels to mainland Japan testing his skill in shiai and randori, often winning against some of Japan’s best. He trains diligently at the Kodokan. Becomes a protégé’ of the famed Uchijima Sensei, a master of Judo, in particular “newaza” or ground grappling. He gains a working practical knowledge of Judo, Jujutsu, Karate, Chinese Boxing and who knows what else. In 1938 he leaves the SMP after 13 years service and heads up the security detachment for the British Legation in Tokyo. He serves in this position for two years. Living and training in Japan, access to the BEST of his time (and ours too probably)!

FAST FORWARD…

The world is at war. The Allied powers against the Axis of Evil. O’Neil is now in the US, seconded to the OSS, working under WEF. A new “commando” unit is being formed headed by a man named Fredericks. This composite group of assault raiders matches US and Canadian forces under the banner of the FIRST SPECIAL SERVICE FORCE. They will become LEGEND!

Then Colonel Fredericks contacts General Donovan of the OSS and requests WEF’s services in training these troops. Fairbairn recommends D.M. “Paddy” O’Neil. O’Neil accepts and goes a step further……He just doesn’t “train” these men, HE JOINS THEM!

O’Neill gave great thought to the needs of these special troops as it related to close quarters combat. He was instrumental in developing the V-42 Fighting Knife. But it was the “system” of close combat he devised that was his genius!

The entire O’Neill system as taught then is little known today. But suffice to say that this method was a blend of tactics, strategy and physical combatives that was astounding, and PROVED EFFECTIVE in REAL COMBAT countless times.

Now this isn’t about the nuts and bolts of the O’Neil method.
The point is this: With ALL of O’Neill’s experience and expertise the method he devised for all intents and purposes was devoid of any Judo or grappling like techniques (and remember the Forces initial contact with the enemy was to be the Japanese). JUDO WAS HIS FORTE. Why? Because he perfectly knew and understood what the mission of the 1st SSF was all about. He tailored the training to address needs as would be faced in REAL COMBAT by these troops!

O’Neill’s logic and genius is evident in the complete method (not just dribs and drabs from various FM’s and TM’s). But more importantly what lessons are to be garnered from this? What can be learned? WHY did O’Neil chose the methods and tactics (more important than the technique) that he did?

Without a doubt O’Neil knew his business and knew it well. So why? That’s the question. And what will the answer teach US, now?

10 Common-sense Self Defense Tips For Men

Posted by admin on June 1, 2010 in Martial Arts

For more than 30 years I have been running specialized self defence courses and seminars. Over that time I have shown thousands of people how to protect and look after themselves.

Increasing personal safety ALWAYS commences with awareness.

Since most men may be attacked in almost any situation and for a wide-ranging variety of reasons I offer the following advice.

Here is a list of ten simple things that you can do immediately that will increase your safety:

1 - Most men get involved in physical trouble as a result of saying something rude, offensive, tactless, stupid or hurtful. Controlling what comes out of your mouth can keep it in good shape. Think before you speak.

2 - If a fight breaks out in a bar - leave immediately. Go before all the drunks and brawlers start swinging chairs, bottles, glasses and punches. A “free for all” usually starts with just two protagonists. Innocent bystanders often get hit. Those who leave all the fools to bash each other do not.

3 - NEVER attempt to mediate an argument between a man and a woman. Both will cease arguing or fighting with each other and turn on you - the common enemy. If you fear for the woman’s safety, call the police.

4 - Understand that many people these days have a cocktail of drugs and booze in their veins. It makes them argumentative, aggressive and “Mike Tyson-esque.” Avoid people who are “off the planet.” Even a casual glance at them can set them off. Leave them with their own demons.

5 - Don’t make the fatal mistake of thinking that ANYBODY fights “fair” any more. Those days are over - they have been since the John Wayne era! Expect multiple attackers, weapons, possibly both.

6 - The cemeteries are full of dead heroes. Don’t add to their number. Run if you can. There is no shame in avoiding a fight. In fact, running away is smart.

7 - Recognize objects in every room of your home that could be used as makeshift weapons. Home invasion is a growing curse these days due to the unwillingness of our governments to protect their citizens.

8 - THIS IS MORE OF A LEGAL WARNING: Understand that if you allow yourself to be placed in a “compromising” position with a woman, particularly one who is “under-age,” then the woman’s version of events will usually be believed over the man’s version. Do not allow yourself to get into such situations.

9 - Negotiation is a far higher art form than physical confrontation. Do anything reasonable to avoid a fight. NOTHING good ever comes out of conflict. War is proof of that.

10 - When all else fails, your back is to the wall and there is absolutely no other alternative left remember… “it is better to be tried by twelve than carried by six.”

Remember my opening words - “increasing personal safety ALWAYS commences with awareness.” Increase your awareness, mind your manners, know your surroundings and you will certainly improve your safety.

ENGAGEMENT: Recognizing the Value of Training - The Keys to Martial Arts Mastery, Key #6

Posted by admin on January 10, 2010 in Martial Arts

Remember when you first started training? For some, it was just a few days or weeks ago, for others, years have gone by since we took our first step on the Path of Warrior Mastery. But, can you remember?

Even more importantly, can you remember what brought you to the program? What was going on in your life at the time. How long had you been thinking about taking martial arts classes and why then, at that moment, did you decide to take action?

Remember what you told us you wanted to get from the program? Remember the personal interview during your first visit as-well-as the chats since then? What is it that the martial arts gives you or helps you with that keeps you coming to class?
What?

And, more importantly than “why” you began training is “how do you know it’s working in your life? How have you been tracking your results? Aside from new belts and tips and all the trappings’ that say you’ve done a lot, how has your training been helping with those areas of your life you said you wanted to fix?
You see, it’s one thing to say that you want to learn martial arts or to become a warrior and it’s quite another matter to be doing what is necessary to become the new you in your dreams. As one of my teachers says…

…”everybody wants to progress

…everyone is into personal development, but…

…very few are willing to look in the mirror to see where he or she is, right now. Very few are willing to ask the really hard questions like “why do I do things the way I do,” or, “what habits do I have that are getting in my way?”

“Unfortunately, on the road to anywhere…

…you can’t get there from not-here.”

One of the best signs that your teachers have to see who is, and who is not fully engaged in the program is that questing, seeking attitude. The students and members (yes, parents are learning too) who ask the most questions, or more specifically the right questions, are the ones who are both 1) progressing faster than average and 2) less likely to see that progress because their eyes are constantly on the road in front of them. For these students, the questions are not, “when do I test for my next belt or get my next tip,” but, “how does this ABC relate to XYZ part of my life?

Everyone of us has the capacity to engage in what we are doing at the 100% level. No one can give 110% and giving less is under achievement. But, many students, both academic and within the martial arts, shoot themselves in the foot without even knowing it. It’s almost as, without consciously knowing the damage they are causing, set themselves up for failure before ever taking the first step towards achieving their goal.

One way this is done is in not being able to clearly see or focus on what’s important as discussed above. The other is in being willing to accept less than best at the outset.

While we may be Okay with getting less because we know we gave it our all, many have the habit of setting a goal like, “I want to lose 20 pounds,” and then, in the very next breath, expressing, “but I’d be Okay with losing 5.”

How destructive our speech can be to our own subconscious focus - don’t you think?

So, as we enter the next quarter of this year, let’s focus on the original goals, with any modifications since beginning. And, with an eye on results, lets be here (or anywhere you find yourself for that matter), fully engaged 100%. Let’s ask the questions that will allow growth to be almost automatic and, if we find something that isn’t serving us - if we cannot fully engage - recognize it as a distraction and let it go.

The goal of the Warrior Mastery & Leadership Program is to produce, what in Japanese is called, the Tatsujin - the human being developed to his or her fullest potential.

Not a karate master.

Not a good martial artist.

Not a Black Belt.

The goal is to become a Tatsujin…

…a master of life!

Maryland Home Inspections, Work Out Clothes, Fort Worth Home Inspectors

Posted by admin on December 18, 2009 in Legal Stuff, Martial Arts, Web Of Home Improvement

Maryland home inspections have probably been around probably as long as houses. People would often ask someone they were familiar wtih, suck as a parent, friend, or sometimes even a builder, to make a judgement on the house they were buying or planning to sell.
All too often, that assessment was based on scanty observation, with little or no understanding of what was important, and quite often someone not familiar at all with the building trades. These were simpler times, using simple construction techniques for the most part, and as was the case, it was much easier to perform an assessment.
That was then and this is now. Times have changed and subsequently so have home inspections. Primarily, the purpose of a property inspection is to inform the customer of any major deficiencies in the condition of the home, systems, integral or influencing peripheral parts of the property. We also believe it is equally important to include in our reports the good parts of a property. As well, wel know that an educated buyer is more likely to make a better decision. The buyer would be misguided if we only focused on the problems and concerns with a home.
