To give a little back this year, there is the great Bamboo initiative for eco-shoppers. If someone buys jewelry which is in this environmentally aware initiative, a portion of the purchase is given for planting sustainable resources in Nsu Penida and Bali. Each item of jewelry is marked with the exact number of young bamboo plants gifted before the pieces are sent out. There’s plenty of variety to suit anyone’s taste, indeed going green come year is that easy… So, this year, before you go to the department store to spend your hard earned money on something you aren’t at all sure about in the first place, do look at the fabulous collections now on offer from John Hardy.
Diamonds are allotropes of carbon , whose hardness and high dispersion of light make it useful for industrial applications and jewelry.
Diamond in Greek means “impossible to tame”. Diamonds are found mainly in central and southern Africa, although significant sources of the mineral have been discovered in Canada, Russia, Brazil, and Australia.
There are Synthetic Diamonds and Natural Diamonds.
There is something so special about diamonds, and they are so valuable, that people have been trying to make them for a long time.
Synthetic diamonds were first produced in 1953, in Stockholm ,Sweden by ASEA ,Sweden’s major electrical manufacturing company. Pressure was maintained within a device at an estimated 83,000 atmospheres for an hour to produce these diamonds.
It now seems that it is possible to make diamonds in a laboratory so perfect down to the same atomic structure that DeBeers, the world’s largest diamond consortium, is running scared.
And you know what, these diamonds can be made and sold at a profit.
Apparently there are in Russia alone 5 laboratories producing synthetic diamonds that have the same atomic structure as natural diamonds but with ONE difference, they are too perfect.
They have the same characteristics as real diamonds, the same hardness, same conductivity, the same sparkle.
Different types of Synthetic Diamonds:
2 different processes are being used to produce Synthetic Diamonds:
The oldest process uses pressure, lots of it, and carbon.
Since diamonds are carbon, eventually people were able to make diamonds in this manner, but these diamonds were easily distinguishable from natural diamonds.
Originally, the pressure process was developed by GE and, by major manufacturers, on a much larger scale.
There is also a cubic press system.
The newest process actually grows diamonds layer by layer as a chemical process and is called Chemical vapor deposition.
This process allows many new uses for diamonds which in the past had previously been either too expensive to implement or too difficult to make.
The most important characteristic of CVD diamond growth is the ability to control the properties of the diamond produced.
Diamonds are now being used to machine tools, especially for non-ferrous alloys. CVD diamond also has applications in electronics. Conductive diamond has been demonstrated as a useful electrode under many circumstances.
Diamonds are also being used as radiation detection devices. Diamonds also have uses as semiconductors because the diamonds can be contaminated with impurities.
Diamond is the ideal material. It can be used in computers to run them at speeds that would melt anything on the market today.
Diamonds can also replace rubies to make lasers of extreme power.
Diamonds can be used as memory storage devices which could be so small as to allow a cellphone to fit into a watch and an iPod to store 20,000 movies.

Some people have specific color preferences while some people also like only specific stones, and are energized by being around them. Gemstone earrings exist so that people may be able to select their jewelry based on their own preferences, and customize their accessories according to their desires.
Experts in psychic phenomena believe that each gemstone stands for something. Certain stones perform certain functions, or encourage a specific aspect of one’s personality. For example, wearing garnet is said to help ease the pain of a bad breakup, or cause jealousy between lovers. Amethyst is said to protect its wearer against the ill effects of alcohol, slow down intoxication and prevent hangovers. Turquoise is said to give emotional strength. Jade has always had enormous importance in Asian civilization; it is said to have the mystical power to protect its wearer against nightmares and other psychic attacks.
Diamond — currently the hardest mineral known to man — is said to stand for strength and purity, which is why it is in demand in gemstone earrings among both men and women. Emeralds are said to stand for harmony, strength of heart, and luck with love. Emeralds themselves are rare, and the extremely rare red emerald is said to be even more valuable than diamonds. Sapphires stand for wisdom, calm and faith. Finally, rubies stand for passion, excitement, loyalty and sexual pleasure.
Gemstone earrings may also stand for birth months, as some precious and semi-precious stones are also birthstones. The different birthstones per month are listed thus:
* January - Garnet
* February - Amethyst
* March - Aquamarine or Bloodstone
* April - Diamond
* May - Emerald
* June - Pearl, Moonstone or Alexandrite
* July - Ruby
* August - Peridot or Sardonyx
* September - Sapphire
* October - Opal or Tourmaline
* November - Topaz
* December - Turquoise, Zircon or Blue Topaz
Different gemstone earrings may lend strength to different aspects of an individual’s personality. Whether or not a person believes in the mythical and supernatural characteristics and powers associated with these stones, wearing gemstone earrings nevertheless may feel like the wearer has on a tangible part of his or her personality that looks good, as well.

From pocket watch to a fashion accessory. What was once, in the earliest years of portable watches, considered to be unsuitable for men and only for ladies, has developed today into a fashion utensil that everybody has. Meanwhile, the wristwatch is no longer only a tool to tell which time it is. It is a designer piece and can indicate much more than the time.
A great deal of mechanics in a small housing
The first confirmable portable timepiece was made in 1500. This was not a wrist watch, but more of a pocket watch. Through technical advancement, which made it possible for people to house mechanics in an increasingly smaller space, the needed pieces of the clockworks were able to be brought into a manageable form. In this way, the first pocket watch was born, which at the time was still the size of an egg.
The computerized wristwatch from Japan
A entirely new watch came onto the market in the 1970’s from Japan, which had developed its own watch industry. The new watch from Japan was no longer set on a mechanical basis, but on a computerized control. This wristwatch expanded its range of capacity rapidly. The wrist watch no more just showed the time. The little timepiece on the wrist now also knew the date, the day of the week and even knew whether a leap year was involved.
The wristwatch as jewelry
Now, the wrist watch is much more than a watch. The wristwatch has become a fashion accessory. Wristwatches come in all colouration and shapes conceivable. One can also buy harmonious watches from every fashion collection. The current watches are dominated by the correct fashion trends. Despite these various trends, there is something for every taste. The small watches, which need spectacles to tell the time, and the extravagant huge watches, which make it hard to walk upright. By all means, one thing is certain: science is still likely to make so much progress - that the wrist watch will be found on the wrists of people for a long time, to respond to the question as to what time it is.
